Obstruction Lights ICAO Standard
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) sets standards for airport design and operations. ICAO Annex 14 sets out standards for marking and lighting obstructions.
ICAO Annex 14 requires that all structures over 45 meters above ground level (AGL) must be marked with aviation warning lights or paint. Low-intensity obstruction lights are used for obstacles up to 45 meters in height. Medium-intensity obstruction lights are used for obstacles with a height between 45m and 150m.
ICAO Annex 14 also specifies that:
● Low-intensity obstacle lights, Type A or B, should be used for less extensive objects with a height above the surrounding ground of less than 45 m
● Medium- or high-intensity obstacle lights should be used if Type A or B obstacle lights are inadequate or an early special warning is required
● Such obstacles could be telecommunications towers, chimneys, cranes, wind turbines, and buildings
